I can't reallly see kid / teenage Harry with anyone. Because he is a kid and then has more important things to worry about. And I know eventually that stops and he can truly grow up, but I have trouble seeing the grown up Harry. But I love the dynamics between him and Luna. If there's anyone he can be with, it's her.
I like Harry/Hermione better than either Harry/Ginny or Hermione/Ron. But I also like the purely friendship relationship that Harry/Hermione have. So I don't really like them together, but I think they would work together. (Unlike Harry/Ginny and Hermione/Ron, which don't work for me at all)
When Emma Watson was asked in an interview if Hermione should be with Harry or Ron, she said Harry. When Dan Radcliffe was asked what character he thought Harry would end up with, he said Luna. Actually, he said "definitely Luna" (this was sometimes after OOTP but before HHP.) I know the actors aren't the characters exactly, but I figure they are as close as we got, as they have to "take on" the character to play the roles.
I like the idea of Snape/OC -- particularly in Rowling's world. Had she allowed Snape to live, another character is the only one he could be with. However, most fanfiction authors have trouble writing OCs, so Hermione is the best choice. And there's some good fics with Snape/Hermione, and they work well.
I never seem to go with fandom ships either. Ever! At least you guys are open and nice about it. I've been to some places where people get rather insulting. "Are you stupid? It's X and X together. There's is no other reality outside the creators. Just accept the reality." And on and on.
I'm not stupid.... I just prefer to take an active part in the creative process. If I don't like something in the stories, I change it. This goes for pairings and anything else (IE in my reality Snape, Lupin, and Tonks don't die -- and I don't have to accept anything else).

Don't you think it just defeats the whole purpose of what we do to put one another down about our fanfiction preferences? I hate when people do that, it's so rude. There's no reason for fanfiction if you are not exploring options outside the boundaries of canon. There are plenty of things that I'm not into but I would never begrudge someone their right to the creative process.
The fun thing about fanfiction is trying to create a story within a world that someone else has already constructed, with the characters they've provided. It doesn't not mean trying to write a version of what the author already wrote; we don't need that. JKR already wrote it. Why would we want to read a worse version? That's how I feel, anyway.
As far as Snape/OC I can totally see your point. I think HGSS is popular because it's the easiest to write and it doesn't take a lot of reaching. The problem with OCs is that there's not much of an audience for them. People tend to think OC's as main characters are self-inserts or mary sues. Even if it's done well, I think it's difficult to find people who want to read them. People want to write what's going to get reviews, and people want to read what other people have reviewed because they take it as a sign that it's a good fic.

I actually found a REALLY adorable and great Draco/Luna fic once. It blew me away and made me cry.
But I think my otp for Harry Potter is probably Snape/Hermione or Snape/OC. I can't ship Hermione with Ron. In fact, I can't ship ANYONE with Ron. But I do enjoy Hermione/one of the Weasley's besides Ron, and Dramione.
Anybody else think that marriage law fics are good? I've read some really well written ones.

I like marriage law fics. And Dramione is my OTP. But I do like Neville/Luna, Neville/Ginny and Draco/Luna. And the occasional Luna/Blaise.

What is marriage law?

Where two characters are put into an arranged marriage due to a new law that comes out. The most common pairing are Snape/Hermione, Dramione, and Sirius/Hermione... I believe.

Well, that's not all it is. A good marriage law fic has to have a plot to it. And a reason for the law being passed..
The most common one is this: Basically, after the war and everything is over, the Wizarding population has dropped so drastically, that everyone within a certain age limit (minus those that are already married, engaged, and stuff like that) must pick a partner and get married to help the population out. And if you don't choose a spouse within a certain amount of days, the Ministry of Magic decides one for you. A lot of times there's petitioning involved, so you have a lot of choices. Things like that. It's pretty neat. :3

I've read some good marriage law fics, but by now, I just find them unoriginal. So I generally avoid them. To me, plot is most important and if you can't have an original plot, I'm not going to bother reading.
Plus, a lot of marriage law fics are unrealistic. Even the premise is a bit bizarre, but even after that, for it to work, it must have proper set up and development. Most fics fail in this.
Do you have the link to that Luna/Draco fic, Sadira? I have a friend who is obsessed with that ship (although he mostly bases because "they look good together." Shallow reason). Anyway, I can't see them together at all, but then I haven't ever read a good story pairing the two of them.

Some of them are really, really, well written and they just stick with you. Although I have read a lot (or started at least...) of marriage law fics that were just terrible. But I like it when authors will take the concept and make it their own. They tweak it to their own liking. I think that a lot of fanfiction authors get lazy with what they write. I'm one of them. I'm trying to do better on that.... I love it when authors make a story that you remember. I sure do. Taco is the one who found it. It's probably one of my favorite fics. I honestly don't know why. It has its quirks, but overall it's really good. www.fanfiction.net/s/3158738/1/Happenstance

If a writer can take a concept and making it original and well-written, then that's awesome. The marriage law idea still seems a bit overused, but it makes for interesting comparisons. Stories that you remember -- yes! That would have to be a judgement on what I would call a good fanfiction story. So many stories just get muddled together and I can't remember them later, but the select stories that I can recall months or even years later? Well done. Lazy authors are less lazy than those who don't write at all. I have several original-plot, novel-length fanfictions ideas. What have a written? Not a thing. I watch the stories in my mind for amusement; I feel somewhat bad for never writing them.... Thanks.

I really like Severitus stories, too. There's one called "Because You're Mine" and it's amazing! It's got a really good plot, and all theses twists and turns, and it's really well written. I also like the romance in it, except it has Ron/Hermione.
